An Oregon treatment program had its request for two federal grants rejected because the margins on its application were two-tenths of an inch too wide, The Oregonian reported Dec. 3.OnTrack, Inc., was seeking a total of $703,000 in grants but was rejected on a technical basis. A spokesperson for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) said that a total of 46 of the 186 applications for the adolescent program that OnTrack was applying for were rejected for technical errors, as were 29 of 82 applications for the second program, which would benefit mothers with addictions.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) wrote a letter to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson asking that OnTrack's application be considered on its merits. "When you look at this you are just flabbergasted that the government now sees a connection between a one-inch margin and effective drug and alcohol treatment," Wyden said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. "This is a textbook case of government taking leave of its senses."
