Six Native American and Alaskan Native communities recently received grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to develop local addiction-treatment plans.A total of $1.5 million was awarded for the 18-month projects, which are intended to help communities plan for and unite behind treatment programs needed by residents, said SAMHSA Administrator Charles Curie.
Grantees included the Chesterfield County (S.C.) Coordinating Council; the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe of Washington state; Eagle Wing Recovery Services of Hoopa, Calif.; the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes in Alaska; the Native American Indian Center in Columbus, Ohio; and the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma.
