PA: Funding Cuts Threaten Drug Courts, Treatment December 16, 2003
Funding Tips & Trends
Legislators' plans to cut $104 million from Pennsylvania's drug-treatment budget is threatening to shutter Philadelphia's successful Drug Treatment Court, not to mention other treatment programs around the state. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Dec. 16 that $40-42 million of the planned cuts would come from Philadelphia, prompting an outcry from drug-court supporters.
"We believe that the legislators and our governor ... need to step up to the plate and restore every single dollar," said District Attorney Lynne Abraham. "The program will die without funding."
Abraham said 85 percent of the 800 arrestees who have completed Philadelphia's drug-court program remain arrest-free.
The budget cuts come as state legislators grapple with a $2.5 billion budget deficit. Other treatment programs that would be cut include those for pregnant women, families, juveniles who need long-term care, and other court-ordered programs.
