A $1.1-million federal grant is aimed at providing treatment to nonviolent offenders with a drug problem who go through the Baltimore Circuit Court system in Maryland, the Baltimore Sun reported Oct. 24.

The grant will fund a program that provides treatment for addicted offenders within 35 days of arrest. Previously, offenders were sent to jail or put back on the street while waiting for a court date.

The money also will pay for residential treatment for 120 adult and 35 young offenders.

Also through the grant, a process will be created within the court system for assessment, referral, and case management. The funding was awarded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The program is set to begin Nov. 3.
