The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) recently announced the winners of its 2003 Innovators Combating Substance Abuse awards, which includes a $300,000 grant for each of the five awardees.

The 2003 winners are Michael C. Fiore, M.D., M.P.H., a researcher who has examined smoking among healthcare professionals and worked to get smoking status to be listed on patients' health charts; Raymond Materson, a needlepoint artists whose work focuses on themes of addiction and compassion; A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., a researcher who focuses on addiction assessment theory and tools; William R. Miller, Ph.D., developer of motivational counseling techniques used worldwide; and Mark W. Parrino, M.P.A., a treatment advocate and president of the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence.

"Their work -- and their willingness to find creative ways to achieve meaningful results -- has stretched the boundaries of conventional care and has had a direct impact on the treatment, prevention, and awareness of this chronic disease," said J. Michael McGinnis, M.D., senior vice president and director of the health group at RWJF.
