AMA Guidelines For Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS)
The GAPS recommendations were designed to be delivered ideally as a preventive services package during a series of annual health visits between the ages of 11-21. This series includes age appropriate questions on alcohol, tobacco and drugs as part of the adolescent patient history. 

American Family Physician, Academy of Family Physicians, 1999. Alcohol Related Problems: Recognition and Intervention  
This article discusses incorporating questions about alcohol into the patient history, and reviews intervention and readiness to change strategies physicians can use with patients whose alcohol use patterns put their health at risk.

NIAAA. Alcohol Problems in Intimate Relationships: Identification and Intervention, A Guide for Marriage and Family Therapists
This guide helps marriage and family therapists understand the dynamics of risky drinking in relationships; it encourages universal screening and interventions for previously undetected alcohol problems. The guide provides appropriate tools and resources.

NIAAA. Assessing Alcohol Problems: A Guide for Clinicians and Researchers, Second Edition, Revised 2003
This publication focuses on the range of alcohol problems and may be useful when patients need help beyond a brief intervention. The chapter on screening reviews the various screening tools and points out the difference between screening and assessment.

NIAAA. Helping Patients who Drink Too Much; A Clinicians Guide, 2005 Edition 
This guide was developed by The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to help primary care and mental health clinicians identify and care for patients who drink heavily or have alcohol use disorders. 

TIP 24: A Guide to Substance Abuse Services for Primary Care Clinicians, 1997
This guide discusses substance abuse and primary care and screening for substance use disorders. Brief intervention and assessment in the event of a positive screen are also discussed. This guide also reviews specialized substance abuse treatment programs. implementation, pharmacotherapy, and legal and ethical issues. Copies of screening and assessment instruments as well as substance abuse resources for the primary care setting are included.

TIP 31: Screening and Assessing Adolescents for Substance Use Disorders, 1999
This guide provides a review of preliminary screening, as well as comprehensive assessment of adolescents for referral and treatment. Legal issues in the screening and assessment of adolescents are also discussed. Screening and assessment of adolescents in juvenile justice settings and drug identification and testing in that system are also included.

TIP 7: Screening and Assessment for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Among Adults in the Criminal Justice System, 1994
This guide discusses screening, assessment, and readiness for treatment, as well as special assessment issues. Treatment planning and treatment progress, along with legal and ethical issues, criminal justice treatment planning are reviewed. Screening and assessment instruments are discussed along with supplemental instruments recommended for the assessment of life domains and problem areas of adult clients               

Walters, S., Baer, J. Talking with College Students about Alcohol: Motivational Strategies for Reducing Abuse.
This book offers guidelines for assessing and working with college drinkers. Provided is a wealth of practical advice on interacting with students in a range of contexts, from brief conversations in medical settings to motivational counseling sessions and group interventions.
