How do I apply for non-profit status for my community program?

In order to be eligible for non-profit status your organization must be set up and operated for one or more of the specific purposes outlined in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code section 501(c)(3).

In order to apply as a non-profit organization (described in section 501(c)(3) of the Code) you need to submit an "Application for Recognition of Exemption" (IRS Package 1023) along with the required user fee. You will also need to request an employer identification number by submitting an "Application for Employer Identification Number" (IRS Form SS-4).

For more information on this process read IRS Publication 557 ("Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization") and for information on Employer Identification Numbers read IRS Publication 1635 ("Understanding your EIN").

The IRS website provides a step-by-step review of what an organization needs to apply for non-profit status along with other important tax information. You can also obtain forms and publications through the IRS by calling 1-800-829-3676.
